If you like a good park, this one's for you. The Legacy Foundation announced $4 million in Love Where You Live grants for seven projects at IBEW Local 697 in Merrillville on Oct. 28. Crown Point isn't on the list, but the money goes to neighbors: Gary, Hammond, Hobart, Griffith, Highland, Lowell and New Chicago.
Gary's Legacy Park & Art Walk Project includes a splash pad, waterpark, pool restoration and pickleball courts. Highland's grant will turn a long-vacant former gas station at 8436 Kennedy Ave. into a community gathering place. A Lilly Endowment grant supported the initiative.
- Hammond: $645,200 for the Optimist Lake Project
- Hobart: $500,000 for Festival Park improvements
- Griffith: $500,000 for year-round multi-sport recreation
- Lowell: $300,000 for Historic Town Square
- New Chicago: $168,500 for basketball court revitalization
